Do no harm.
Visceral Visions Society and CultureBrew.Art endeavour to approach all of our work through the lens of decolonization, grounded in the commitment to continually learn and unlearn what it means to live, work, and be on the stolen lands of the Coast Salish peoples, and the territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations (colonially known as Vancouver, BC).
When we asked ourselves and the arts community of colour what a decolonized digital space might look like, we got a lot of smart and beautiful responses. And in the end, it seemed to really boil down to doing no harm, whether it’s to another person, another group, the wider community, the environment, or to yourself. So a large part of the work at CultureBrew.Art has been about thinking through the potential impacts and the ramifications of the choices we make.
But we are not creating CultureBrew.Art on our own. CultureBrew.Art’s genesis was rooted in community, and its success will also be rooted in community. So as a community-driven initiative, every single person who interacts in this space has the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing work that is decolonization.
So what does this mean in terms of a Code of Conduct, if we’re focusing our efforts to doing no harm? We’re asking everyone, whether you’re an Artist Member or Subscriber – or both – to agree to three basic ground rules or agreements:
-
You agree to take personal responsibility to maintain a harassment-free space in CultureBrew.Art, which means sustaining an environment free of sexual harassment, discrimination, bullying, and violence. Harassment can take many forms, including unwanted sexual attention, inappropriate jokes or texts, threats, and other unwelcome verbal, written, visual, or physical communication or conduct. Just don’t. Ever.
If you experience harassment, discrimination, and/or bullying when interacting on CultureBrew.Art, please notify us at [email protected]. -
You agree to watch out for others when interacting on CultureBrew.Art. If you witness a Subscriber or Member behaving inappropriately toward another Member, then do something: either point out the behaviour as being inappropriate in real time to give the transgressor an opportunity to learn and perhaps apologize, and/or report the inappropriate behaviour to us at [email protected].
-
You understand and agree that violating the first agreement may result in the suspension of your account either temporarily or permanently.
Visceral Visions Society is a signatory to the Canadian Code of Conduct for the Performing Arts, and as such, we have pledged to create safer, more inclusive, respectful workplace/digital spaces where artists can thrive, free from all forms of harassment. If you are a Subscriber, we encourage you to consider becoming a signatory as well.
