Show Description(s):
Colonial Park, by Shauntay Grant:
Set in January 2018, two youths watch the removal of the controversial statue of Edward Cornwallis in downtown Halifax. In recent years, Cornwallis' legacy as founder of the City of Halifax has been overshadowed by his infamous 1749 scalping proclamation. The play tells the story of two young people engaged in conversation around Cornwallis, colonialism, and the fall of colonist statues around the world.
Mischief, by Lisa Nasson:
Brooke, a strong Mi’kmaw woman in Halifax, is held in an interrogation room after taking a chainsaw to the head of the statue of Edward Cornwallis. As she sits with a police officer who she names ‘Miss’, she dreams of a better world for her people. Brooke’s brave actions are put up against the law of society, and we see the two opposing women attempt to come to an understanding. A story filled with fantasy, memory and wit, Lisa Nasson’s play shows us how heart is more powerful than rules.
Available Roles:
Afam is a 21 year old Black male. He is a 3rd year undergraduate student and first generation Canadian born to Nigerian parents. He arrives at Cornwallis Park and comes across Alex. He is insightful, passionate, and strives to keep people accountable.
Alex is a 20 year old white male. He is a 2nd year undergraduate student majoring in Journalism and writer for the student paper “The Voice”. Alex is sitting at Cornwallis Park in anticipation of the Cornwallis statue being removed. He is detail-oriented and thorough, but perhaps takes himself too seriously.
Brooke Stevens is a 24 year old Mi’kmaw woman, originally from Millbrook First Nation. On the outside, she appears to be an activist, but it’s her blood, ancestors, and community that lead her to create change. She is quick-witted, energetic, determined, and lives without fear.
Miss is a 27 year old white police officer in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is very structured, judgemental, and professional in her work. She is ignorant to the culture of Mi’kmaq people, and at times, oppresses them. She holds herself without understanding the Mi’kmaq way of life, and we see that she needs to begin her journey of education.
Actors cast in “Colonial Park” and “Mischief”, will perform in both stories.
Neptune Theatre wishes to engage with our local Indigenous and Black communities in casting the characters Brooke and Afam. In addition to accepting submissions from established artists, we believe in seeking people who desire to perform and have not yet had the chance. Director and Playwright, Lisa Nasson, will workshop and mentor prior to rehearsals, and walk-through these stories together. We strive to make the audition process as comfortable as possible, without any pressure to “get the part”. We want to get to know you as an artist, as we discover the characters’ voices together.
Equity and Non-Equity actors are eligible to apply. Artists will be engaged under a TYA contract. Preference will be given actors living in Atlantic Canada.
